Kathleen Duncan – Woodturner

Kathleen Duncan

Many of the woods I use are from trees that have been cut down due to disease or construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill. To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. With plain woods, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.
Each piece I turn has a balance between touch, shape, proportion, and any embellishments I decide to include. I turn a variety of items – both functional and artistic. I have recently started turning very thin (2mm) bowls and piercing a design into them with a high-speed dental drill.
Much as I enjoy turning by myself, what gives me the greatest satisfaction is showing children the magic that we call woodturning.
As a child, Kathleen was introduced to woodturning by watching her father make knobby-legged furniture for the family. She was fascinated as chips flew off the spinning wood. It wasn’t until after his death that she first attempted to turn something on the ShopSmith she’d inherited from him. Following her move to Ridgefield (WA) in 2004, she became a member of the two woodturning clubs in Portland. The clubs were a starting point for learning more about woodturning techniques and wood in general. Kathleen is currently a member of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), the Cascade Woodturners, the Southwest Washington Woodturners, and the Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild. In 2015, she was elected to a 3-year term to the American Association of Woodturners Board of Directors. She began her second term in 2018.
Kathleen holds a BS and an MS degree in Computer Science from Washington State University. Prior to her retirement in 2014, she developed administrative software for WSU.
Kathleen has demonstrated woodturning at several venues including Art in the Pearl and the Vancouver Recycled Arts Festival. She participated in the 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018 Clark County Open Studios Tour. She has demonstrated at AAW chapters nationally and in Canada. She is a prolific contributor to the tables of the Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild’s regular appearances. She displays and sells her work at Art on Oak in Hood River, OR.

As an artist, I have always loved Italy and enjoyed painting the lovely old buildings and the people. My work has been at “Festa Italiana” in Seattle at the Seattle Center. Faces have always intrigued me as such I try and capture them in my art. It is an honor to be able to show my work here at the Broadway Gallery. I hope you enjoy my many paintings of faces and places.

I am a native resident of Western Washington, living in the Silverlake area. Drawing was a passion of mine in my youth. Over the year’s art has come and gone as I raised my family. In 2005 I started painting watercolors with a group of friends, sometimes taking a few classes here and there. Over the years, I have grown in my abilities and enjoy the various faces and places I
have traveled and translated them into art. I enjoy traveling in Italy and painting the sites. Iretired this year from a long career in nursing and I am devoting more time to my art.
