About Debra Chase (paintings)
Art is a joyful, spiritual and in-the-moment process for me. Nature is a huge inspiration for these interactions. I focus on the language of art whenever I am engaged in the artistic process. Composition, color and mood have been the primary focus of these recent paintings, which were painted “Alla Prima en Plein Air“, meaning they were painted completely on site in the landscape.
The three small rock formation paintings were done in the fall of 2013 at Georgia O’Keeffe’s beloved Ghost Ranch in Abique, New Mexico. Her spirit is there and her art was most certainly an inspiration to me as I painted where she painted long ago.
The larger landscapes were painted in the Columbia River Gorge where I paint every year with a group from Creative Arts Community in Portland, Oregon. Our group will be celebrating 50 years of art in the Columbia Gorge near Corbett, Oregon next summer!
An event known as Art in the Garden in Portland, Oregon is where the figures were painted. Fifteen painters gather each summer to paint the figure with various inspirational Portland artists & professors.
I graduated from the University Of Washington School Of Art, where I was fortunate to have studied with the late artists, Jacob Lawrence (Cubist and African American historian painter) and Michael Dailey (Abstract painter known as a second generation Norwest Mystic after Mark Tobey).
I received a Masters in Art from Lewis & Clark College in the late nineties and I have taught and made art most of my life.
About Ramona Lauzon (paintings)
My third grade teacher in Castle Rock gave me the encouragement and support that sparked my interest in art. My first painting lessons began with Windell Ellis at age 15. He tought me the basics of oil painting. We studied the Dutch style of Rembrandt. In recent years I’ve taken a class from watercolor artist Carol Boudreau to help me with watercolors. I’ve had lessons with Kathryn Lloyd, a portrait artist in oils, to fill in questions I had about portrait painting. All three artist are masters in their own medium.
In 1974 the man of my dreams came along and we married. When I was 24, Ed and I had a beautiful daughter that became the focus of our lives. With marriage and Michelle, my painting was set aside, picking up the brush some years later.
In the 1990s I brought out the paints and canvas. Needing to kindle the fire, I joined The Columbian Artists Association for the encouragement and support of other artists. I wanted to display and sell my work at the local art shows. During a show I met a lady who started me on my way to painting murals in Kelso. I now have murals on buildings in Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock and Long Beach.
Again and again, I pick up a beautiful brush with paint on my clothes. I have the fire and desire to paint. It could be a brush for watercolors, or a brush for painting murals. But my favorite brushes are the ones that creates these beautiful paintings of landscapes, still lifes and portraits.
