Longview Outdoor Gallery

The Gallery Without Walls in Lake Oswego, Wash., has over 60 pieces of sculpture, 30 of which are on loan for 2 years. The program started in 2000

Many cities throughout the country have an outdoor sculputure program. Puyallup and Port Angeles in Washington and Cannon Beach and Lake Oswego in Oregon have developed successful programs.

Following the examples of these cities, the Longview Outdoor Gallery task force has announced a kick-off event scheduled for the Fall of 2011. The idea stems from the successes of other communities that have turned their depressed city centers around.

A call to artist will be sent out soon with the goal of having 15 new sculptures to exhibit on Commerce Avenue in downtown Longview for two years. A “People’s Choice” will be made and purchased for permanent installation in downtown Longview. All new sculptures on display will be for sale, offering an incentive for artists to participate.

The Art on the Town program in Port Angeles, Wash., features over 40 sculptures. The program is in its 11th year and has purchased over 39 artworks.

Then a new cycle of sculptures would be installed and the process repeated. With each successive rotation the City’s permanent sculpture collection will expand, thus helping the gradual revitalization of downtown Longview.

The project will be funded by donations. Here’ show you can participate!
