Celebrating the Paintings of Deanie Phillips

Join us in the New Year to celebrate the artwork of long-time local painter Deanie Phillips, silk artist Heather Phillips, and gourd artist Diane Springer.

Our First Thursday celebration takes place on January 2, 2014 at 5:30 pm. Music provided by John Crocker and John Kramer.

Deanie passed away in 2012, but her paintings carry on her love of  landscapes, seascapes, marine, floral and still lifes. Although she worked in many mediums, and even studied with acclaimed watercolorist Charles Mulvey, she loved oils the best.

Deanie originated a special technique in which she assembled panels of cedar boards, antiqued them, and used them as a base for her still life paintings.

Her work has shown in Seattle, Vancouver, Leavenworth and locally. Her son Dennis arranged to show her work this month at The Broadway Gallery.

This month we also feature the silk artwork of Heather Phillips, who describes her show as Between the Lines.

phillipsHeather-jewlscrfkni“So much of life is lived between the lines in areas half hidden from view where nothing is obvious. It is how we deal with what is “half hidden” that makes each life different. It is my opinion it also makes life interesting,” she explains.

Heather uses a combination of geometric design and stencils sprayed with dye to create elements that are hidden between the lines within the design.

Also featured is the unique gourd artwork of Diane Springer

springerDiane-IMG_7014Gourds of all sizes and shapes…Diane Springer looks at each one individually and decides what path she will use to present it as a decorated piece of art. She may simply paint it with acrylic paint, or she may cut, carve and shape it into an altered form.  She may incorporate driftwood or rocks or use her polymer clay forms to enhance the gourd she is working on.  She may dye the gourd, or use a wax-resist technique making the gourd look like batik.

Her goal in decorating gourds is to try and do something different with each one, making each one, large or small, a unique work of art.
