It’s amazing what artists do with everyday materials. I’ve seen the most amazing murals and decorative designs made from broken teacups and shards of pottery that most of us throw away.
Yet putting them together seems to be the work of an artistic mind full of color and wonder. Every artist knows that the birth of an artwork starts either in the mind or in the eye. Ideas spark from a thought or a visual impression.
Marisa Mercure found hers in the subtle surfaces of dirty old tiles as she cleaned out her garage. Which led her to pick up a paintbrush and let the design take shape. Which is how I came to take her picture as she explained how she created her painted tiles to inquiring minds at Lord & McCord’s Art Gallery earlier this month.
It’s a bright spot amongst the dull and dreary winter weather we continue to experience. Like a jewel in the fog.
Congratulations to Marisa for a lovely show. We wish her the best with her lovely painted tiles.
